Snuff Out Cancer

Finding someone who has not been touched by cancer today would be very unusual. Even if you have not faced a frightening diagnosis yourself, it is likely you know someone who has. We can help snuff out the fear of cancer by uniting in prayer and friendship. The Snuff Out Cancer ministry idea was birthed out of a true story of a woman who visited her friend in the hospital following her friend's mastectomy. She took with her a candlesnuffer which she had decorated by using ribbon to attach a Scripture verse card. "When you look at this," she told her friend, "it will remind you that I am praying God will snuff out your cancer." As a result, the candlesnuffer has become a visual reminder that someone cares and is praying.

Local churches wishing to begin a Snuff Out Cancer ministry may order a complete packet from the national Women's Ministries Department. The packet contains:

• Complete information on how to begin Snuff Out Cancer in your church.
  
• Recommended resources for information and inspiration for the person who is dealing with the losses connected with cancer and suggested web sites that can be helpful.
  
• Practical helps a cancer patient may use while going through this journey.
  
• Sample newspaper ad to invite the community to this new prayer/support meeting.
  
• Helpful questions from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to ask the doctor when he uses the word "cancer."
  
• Packet of resource information from the American Cancer Society.
  
• Snuff Out Cancer Prayer Card, which contains twelve prayer needs of the cancer patient. Praying five minutes for each of the twelve needs will equal an hour of prayer.
