Beauty and the Feast

Treating women to makeovers, massage, and meals

More than service—it's servanthood

Every two years Church on the Hill in Vallejo, California, hosts Queen for a Day and Daughters of Destiny. In just one day, two special outreaches touch hundreds of lives, bringing encouragement and meeting physical as well as spiritual needs. Seventy women and 60 girls from varying socioeconomic backgrounds, lifestyles and cultures were blessed at last year's event.

Queen for a Day

The Queen for a Day outreach touches the lives of pre-selected women from area churches, homeless shelters, safe homes and domestic violence groups, as well as single moms and schoolteachers. Each "queen" is matched with a "lady-in-waiting," who meets with her prior to the event to get acquainted and shop for a new outfit the queen will wear on the day of the event. When the event arrives, each lady-in-waiting caters to her queen throughout the day. The queens are treated to a continental breakfast followed by a makeover that includes a massage, make-up application, manicure and professional hairstyling. A catered luncheon, worship service, gift presentation, crowning and an inspirational word is given to finish the day.

Daughters of Destiny

The Daughters of Destiny outreach ministers to girls ages 12 to 18. The girls come from churches, local teen clubs and other youth organizations. The goal is to inspire the young women with hope and encouragement and to build their self-esteem. After breakfast, limousines chauffeur the girls to the Vallejo Dream Center where they participate in a time of worship and attend special breakout sessions. Addressing issues young women grapple with, the sessions include "Abstinence: He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not," "Self-esteem vs. Christ-esteem," and "Peer Pressure: How Not To Compromise." Limousines then return the girls to Church on the Hill for lunch, a special gift presentation and worship service with the queens.

What a phenomenal day! Church on the Hill aspires to physically and spiritually bless others by sharing the gospel and giving everyone involved an opportunity to experience the love and grace of Jesus. The Holy Spirit touches the lives of these women and girls, as well as a host of volunteers. Most importantly, many women open their hearts to a personal relationship with Jesus.

These outreach events reward everyone involved. If you are interested in more information about hosting this type of event, you may contact Sandy Reza, Associate Pastor, Director of Women's Ministries, Church on the Hill, 210 Locust Street, Vallejo, California 94591; 707-644-4451.
