Choosing Leadership

Q

Would you please suggest ways our church can choose a Women's Ministries support team and planning committee?

A

First, review your church's constitution and bylaws as to the appropriate method of choosing leadership for your Women's Ministries. Are the leaders appointed or elected?

If they are elected, the women should elect the Women's Ministries coordinator, assistant coordinator, and secretary/treasurer. These three, along with the pastor's wife, who is included in an advisory capacity, and the pastor as an ex-officio member, make up the support team.

If the leaders are appointed, the pastor appoints the Women's Ministries coordinator. Then the two of them choose the remaining members of the support team. Usually the appointments are for one-year terms. After one year, review all leadership positions. Reappoint or reassign leadership positions for Ministry Groups according to the new Ministry Groups offered in the upcoming year.

The planning committee includes the support team, leaders of all Ministry Groups, and the Event Evangelism coordinator. The planning committee should oversee planning for all Women's Ministries activities. Remember, leadership members need to be active participants in every phase. This will broaden the decision making to many instead of two or three.

It's very important that no woman be approached about a prospective leadership role without first having the approval of the pastor. Also, be sure the woman has training before she is placed in a leadership position.
