Have you ever looked for ways to teach your children how blessed they are? Do they have so many toys and stuffed animals they have trouble deciding which one to play with? Often Grandma and Grandpa (parents too), just keep adding to the already overloaded toy boxes and closets of their children's rooms.
I once heard about a boy who was very, very smart in math. No problem seemed too hard for him. He loved to figure—to add, subtract, divide and multiply. His parents and teachers were amazed at his wonderful ability to "juggle" figures.
One day the boy asked his pastor to give him a math problem. The boy declared that he could solve any problem given to him. After thinking, the pastor asked him to count his blessings. "Just how shall I do that?" asked the boy. The pastor told him to put down the number of days in the year, then multiply by the number of hours in a day, then get the number of minutes. That came to 525,600. "Each minute is a blessing," said the pastor, and the boy agreed. "Now," said the pastor, "we take about twelve deep breaths a minute, and each breath is a blessing, so multiply by twelve." The math wiz was able to give the answer, 6,307,200.
"You're not through," said the pastor. "Now start counting up your friends, and all the flowers, trees, birds, and stars, and all the good books, and all the other blessings God in His goodness has given to you."
The boy could only admit the problem was too much for him, so he gave up, just as any professor of mathematics in a university would have.
Give this math problem to your children, Sunday School class, Missionettes or Royal Rangers. Ask them to count their blessings, and then name them one by one. Just as the old hymn testifies it will surely surprise them how many they have. "Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits" (Psalm 103:2).
