The Path Ahead

"He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. His heart is secure, he will have no fear; in the end he will look in triumph on his foes" (Psalm 112:7,8).

"All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful for those who keep the demands of his covenant" (Psalm 25:10).

We stand poised at the start of a brand new year. No one, except the Lord, knows what lies ahead. Life is an adventurous journey with all kinds of unseen obstacles and thrills before us. There's no need to fear, though; Jesus is our Guide. He longs to make our journey easier and more enjoyable if we will trust and follow His lead. Fear of the unknown threatens to cause panic when we take our eyes off our Guide and try to make our own way through the thicket.

We are saying goodbye to an old year. Sometimes it's tempting to want to stay where we are, with all its comfort and security. Yet Jesus is always calling us to follow—that means forward! He desires to show us fresh truths through new adventures. He knows the further we go with Him on the path, the stronger we will grow.

We carry with us all we've ever learned, but He is never finished with us. There's much more He longs to share with us. Sometimes the lessons come in unusual forms—such as a job lay-off, financial or health problems, but when we trust Jesus as our Guide to lead us, we will discover joy along every path. Enjoy the gift of this new year and delight in following Christ as He continually leads us into more abundant life.

Look forward to the new year with anticipation instead of dread. Our Lord is our Guide!

"I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:13,14).
