Scripture urges the church to care for the widows in their congregations and develop a ministry specifically for them (see Isaiah 1:17). How is your congregation ministering to widows? As they struggle with loss, grief, change of routine, financial affairs and possible relocation, what can your church do to minister to them immediately after the death of their loved one as well as throughout their journey into widowhood?
The national Women’s Ministries Department offers Solace, a 27-page Ministry Packet full of helps for encouraging widows and helping them find places of ministry in their local congregation. The Packet’s contents include:
Lynn Bowman, creator of the Ministry Packet, ministers quarterly to a large group of widows in her own home. She says widows often go unnoticed in the church. Sometimes pastors are unaware of how many widows are in their congregation. People assume the woman’s husband doesn’t attend church, or that the woman never married. “The term, ‘widow,’ is a stigma,” says Bowman, one which keeps some women from wanting to attend a “widows’ group.” However, Bowman encourages these women to “keep busy at church and to give out” as the antidote to their grief. “Whatever gift the Lord has given you, continue to use it,” she teaches.
Regardless of one’s age or marital status, all women have value and significance in the body of Christ. Widows’ life experience, wisdom, and often, availability, make them useful contributors to the work of God in local church ministry. Don’t overlook these valuable, but sometimes forgotten, saints. Widows have much to offer!
