According to the American Medical Association, one quarter of American women will be abused by an intimate partner at some point in their lives. And did you know that 75 percent of 911 calls are related to domestic abuse? Although we may prefer not to believe it, victims of domestic violence are in our churches. Equipped with the grace and love of Jesus, churches are strategically poised to minister healing to the hurts of these fragile souls. A Women’s Ministries coordinator, Bible study or small group leader or a minister’s wife may be the first person in whom these battered women confide. Is your church and its leadership prepared to walk alongside these women to a place of safety and recovery?
Increase your church's sensitivity to the plight of abused women with Fragile Soul, a Ministry Packet recommended as a starting point for those who want to educate churchgoers about abuse, host a weekly prayer group or launch a ministry program for victims of domestic violence. Contents include clergy guidelines for counseling, prevention tips, warning signs of abuse, what to do if you suspect abuse, how to start a support group, networking agencies ideas and many educational resources.
Your interest in the shameful, and often secret, plight of victims’ lives may be the first step toward a better life for these women—free of violence and pain.
